Why Dental Sedation?
You don’t necessarily have to suffer from dental anxiety to request that your procedure is planned under sedation. Opting for a sedative during dental care allows you to:
Easing Dental Anxiety
It’s estimated that 1 in 3 people have some form of dental anxiety. Perhaps you had a bad experience growing up, are afraid of the procedure being painful, or just don’t like the idea of someone with their hands in your mouth. If you find that it’s difficult to follow through with your much-needed oral health care, sedation can make the decision much easier.
Types of Sedation Dentistry Offered
Leaf - All About Smiles provides two types of dental sedation. Each one works differently and produces separate types of results.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation:
Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide can be added onto practically any dental appointment (even cleanings). This lighter analgesic makes you feel less sensitive and more lighthearted. Some people describe it as feeling as if they’ve had a couple of glasses of wine.
Nitrous oxide takes effect quite quickly, with full results in the matter of a few minutes. One of the best parts is that once your treatment is complete, the effects are fully reversible before you leave the office. There are no lingering side-effects such as drowsiness, so there’s no need to have someone else drive you home.
Oral Conscious Sedation:
Conscious sedation is a deeper type of dental sedative that makes you feel as if you’re taking a light nap. Although you’re still partially-awake (enough to answer brief questions or instructions) you probably won’t remember much of the visit whatsoever. Oral sedatives tend to have a bit of an amnesic effect, causing people to forget what happened. So, if your goal is to “tune everything out”, this dental sedation option is the clear choice.
Since conscious sedation does cause lingering drowsiness, it’s crucial to have a trusted friend or family member accompany you to the appointment and drive you home afterward. It can take several hours for the side-effects to fully wear off.
Las Colinas Sedation Dentists
Our dental sedation treatments are performed by licensed dentists with specific training in sedation services. A thorough medical review is required of all sedation patients prior to administering a sedative medication.
